Gingrich Announces 2012 Presidential Campaign

Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich officially announced he's running for president via Twitter. The architect behind the Republican revolution of 1994, Gingrich is considered a GOP heavyweight who is entering an anemic field of potential challengers to President Barack Obama.UPDATE:"I believe we can return America to hope and opportunity," he says in a YouTube video, in which he refers to both his work with President Reagan and later as speaker, when the federal budget was balanced. "There's a much better American future ahead."Despite the well scrubbed presentation, political experts acknowledge Gingrich has some serious hangups,  in his political and personal life. From the HuffingtonPost:The presidential hopeful may find success in connecting with voters on the conservative end of the political spectrum; however, he will nevertheless have political baggage to contend with on the trail.

Earlier this year, Gingrich formed an exploratory committee in weighing a bid for the White House. His roll out of the organization appeared to be a bit disorganized and generated some confusion. Nevertheless, the move allowed him to begin raising money for a presidential campaign.

While recent polls haven't shown Gingrich to be running at the front of the pack of likely Republican presidential contenders, the former speaker is perhaps one of the better known conservative names eyeing the GOP nomination to take on President Barack Obama in 2012.
