Good Folks Coffee Launches Subscription Service

We’ve all had one of those mornings -- the kind where you desperately rattle around in the kitchen drawers, hoping to scrape together enough fresh coffee beans to make a decent cup of joe. But if Good Folks Coffee Company founder Matt Argo has his way, mornings like that will cease to exist.

This week, Good Folks, a small-batch Louisville roaster, launched a subscription service through which customers can order the type of beans they want, at the frequency they want -- all online.

“You can pick new coffees every time, or you can just find the coffee you like and it’s on autopilot,” Argo says. “So you can pick this coffee, two bags, every week. Or this coffee, one bag, every three weeks. It just depends on what your frequency is and (your) consumption rate.”

Argo is following in the footsteps of several popular national coffee subscription services like Craft Coffee or Angel’s Cup, but he says a shift in the Louisville market away from commodity coffee makes now a perfect time to launch Good Folk’s service.

“I do think people are moving past the commodity-grade coffee -- I mean, by no means is it going anywhere -- but you see the specialty market steadily increasing every year,” Argo says.

Argo says there are several different blends and single-origin choices from which customers can choose. He says one of the things that makes their coffee distinct from the commodity choices is that they have personal relationships with coffee farmers worldwide. This, he says, ensures the product they are roasting is seasonal and fair-trade.

“For customers, it’s more of an experience for now than just going to the grocery store and picking the blue tin or the red tin,” he says.

Argo says another big driving factor in launching Good Folks’ subscription service was a mass desire for convenience.

“You know that you are going to drink coffee every morning, so why not just have it on autopilot going to your door,” he says.
