GOP Secretary of State Candidates Debate Voter Fraud, Birth Certificates

Appearing on cn|2 Pure Politics, the two Republican candidates for Kentucky secretary of state defended their proposals for cracking down on voter fraud by implementing tighter restrictions at the ballot box.Telecommunications consultant Hilda Legg and businessman Bill Johnson faced off in a debate moderated by Ryan Alessi in which both said they want to ensure only legal citizens and registered voters are participating in state elections.Legg believes residents should be required to show a birth certificate before registering to vote. Johnson says that idea criminalizes all voters, but he insists residents should have to show some government-issued identification at their polling place.Check it out:Both positions have been slammed by critics as unnecessary and as a way to intimidate poor and minority voters. With less than two weeks until the May 17 primary, Legg is leading in fundraising by a 5-to-1 margin and recently captured the endorsement of former Jefferson County Clerk Rebecca Jackson, who said Legg was a woman of integrity.
