Greater Clark Schools Starts Superintendent Search

Indiana's Greater Clark County Schools board is starting the search for a new superintendent. It was a difficult board decision last year not renew current superintendent Stephen Daeschner’s contract, despite a rise in student achievement. Daeschner is being paid $225,000 a year while the district is trying to cut nearly $4 million from its budget. That was part of the reasoning behind the decision not to renew the contract.A search committee met over the weekend to discuss what qualifications the district wants in its next leader, said board president and committee member Christina Gilkey.“We talked about what kind of professional and personal traits the community would like to see in the next superintendent," she said.Gilkey said whoever fills the office must demand a smaller salary than Daeschner, likely between $160,000 and $180,000 a year.“We talked about incentive pay and it seemed to be like half of the committee had an interest in something like that, what that would look like, what would categories be for success. The other half didn’t think that was a good idea," Gilkey said. The issue of incentives may be discussed further after the district narrows its candidate search in mid-April. Gilkey said it's likely the new superintendent will be in place before the end of the year, but would not start until July 1, after Daeschner's contract expires. The school board will hear a report Tuesday night on the search committee’s discussions over the weekend.
