Green Decries Possible MLK Post Office Closure

Reacting to an announcement by the U.S. Postal Service on Tuesday that three post offices in the city are being reviewed for possible closure, Louisville Metro Councilwoman Judy Green, D-1, urged the federal agency to keep the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. branch open. The office named after the iconic civil rights leader is located at 2727 W. Broadway in the Shawnee neighborhood, which is in Green's district. In a statement, the city lawmaker stressed the branch's historical significance and echoed the sentiments of Louisville NAACP President Raoul Cunningham, who said the office is still heavily used by elderly residents. From Green's office:"It is my hope U.S. Postal Service will take several things into consideration before they make any decision. They should talk with the residents and businesses in the area...there is not a branch to serve West Louisville (and) I hope they also consider that this is a special branch named in honor of Dr. King and it has special meaning and historical significance to the people of West Louisville.”

The post office has slated approximately 3,600 stations for possible closure nationwide, including two other local branches, the Shelby Station located at 2312 S. Preston St. and a bulk air facility at 4440 Crittenden Drive near Louisville International Airport.Postal Service spokesman David Walton says just because an office is under review doesn’t necessarily mean it will close, but added the combination of new technology and the poor economy has impacted the agency financially.
