Ground Broken on Downtown Scholar House

by Stephanie CrosbyThe organization Family Scholar House broke ground this afternoon on a new location for working parents who are trying to earn a degree. The organization’s first location is Louisville Scholar House near the University of Louisville. It provides low-income housing and academic services for single parents who qualify.President and CEO Cathe Dykstra says they’re serving 56 families at the first location, and many more are waiting on help.“Today, I have 637 families on the waiting list receiving services through the pre-residential program, but desperately in need of housing," says Dykstra. The new Downtown Scholar House will be on the corner of First and Breckenridge and is set to begin housing families in January.Dykstra says they have a third facility planned, the Stoddard-Johnston Scholar House, also near U-of-L’s Belknap campus. She expects ground will be broken on that project sometime this year.
