Hand Transplant Anniversary Marked

A milestone is being marked this week at Louisville's Jewish Hospital. It was ten years ago that doctors from Jewish, the University of Louisville and Kleinert and Kutz and Associates performed the country's first hand transplant. The recipient of a new left hand was Matt Scott of New Jersey (pictured), who returned to Louisville Monday to mark the occasion.                    "There are so many hands that touched mine, to make mine the world's first successful hand transplant, and I'm forever grateful for each and every one of them," Scott said during a Monday press conference. The first ever hand transplant was peformed in Europe just prior to the Louisville operation, but the new hand was rejected.Since 1999, four other patients have received new hands at Jewish Hospital. (photo from www.handtransplant.com)
