Health Board To Hold Trans Fat Forums

The Louisville Metro Board of Health will hold two community forums later this month on the health effects of artificial trans fat.Health Department spokesperson Dave Langdon says its part of an education campaign ordered by the Metro Council in a resolution passed last year."The council directed the department of public health and wellness to study the health consequences of consuming foods with trans fats, to educate the public on the public on the subject, and make recommendation for possible regulatory action, if any," Langdon said.Among other things, trans fat is used cooking oils to extend shelf life.Health officials have long warned that artificial trans fat can raise one's risk of heart disease and cause other problems, and its' been banned or restricted by many local governments.Some food companies have voluntarily reduced or removed trans fat from their products.The two forums will be held October 27 and 29 at the health department on East Gray Street.
