The Louisville Metro Landmarks Commission will hold a public hearing Tuesday night on a landmark designation request for the vacant Colonial Gardens complex in south Louisville.The structure was built in 1902 at the corner of New Cut Road and Kenwood Drive, adjacent to Iroquois Park. Over the years it has operated as a beer garden, restaurant and nightspot.Now some investors want to demolish the building and put up a commercial center that they say would retain the style of the old structure. Some local residents are petitioning to have the complex declared a local landmark. City Historic Preservation Officer Richard Jett says the designation would require the developers to make their case for demolition."The individual or entity that's proposing development will have to prove essentially to the landmarks commission that the building is beyond preservation, that it's unreasonable to expect it to be rehabilitated," Jett said.The landmarks commission will meet Tuesday evening at 6:00 at Iroquois High School.
