Here's What the Southwest Regional Library Will Look Like

The plans are out for the long-awaited Southwest Regional Library. The SRL is a proposed 40,000 square-foot facility at Dixie Highway and Kendall Road. It's meant to serve some 100,000 residents from across the area. Other regional libraries are planned for northeast and south-central Louisville. While unveiling the plans, city officials touted the new library's size and scope. In addition to 100,000 books, they say the library will feature modern technology, computer access and large meeting rooms. The plans also call for the SRL to meet LEED standards.(Louisville Free Public Library Director Craig Buthod discusses the Southwest Regional Library and other goals—from technology to getting more books.)The designs were done by JRA Architects of Louisville and Meyer Scherer & Rockcastle of Minneapolis. Library officials say the plans reflect suggestions from the public for an ecologically-friendly library with bigger meeting rooms, more copies of the same books and separate areas for young visitors. The $13 million building will be paid for mostly with a $9.5 million bond issued in the mayor's most recent budget. The rest of the money will come from the Library Foundation. The bond will take 20-years to pay off, but Metro Councilman Rick Blackwell told WFPL last year that the city is currently renting library space at a cost of about $200,000 a year. Your Kindle doesn't look so fancy now, huh?
