Hill Says He's Undecided On Senate Run

Indiana Congressman Baron Hill has made his first public remarks about a possible run for the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated by the retirement of Democrat Evan Bayh. Bayh announced just before last Friday's filing deadline that he would not seek re-election, which means the Democratic nominee will be chosen by the party's central committee before the end of June.Hill, who was out of the country last week visiting American troops, says he hasn't decided yet whether he will add his name to the mix."Yeah,  I''m open to the idea, that doesn't mean I'm going to do it.    Being away has not allowed me to have the kinds of conversations I need to have with folks,"  he said Monday morning.Hill said he planned to talk with Bayh and others Monday about the race.Several other Democrats have expressed interest in getting on the ballot, including Congressman Brad Ellsworth, Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott, and Darren Washington, who's a member of the Gary, Indiana school board.

Rick Howlett was midday host and the host of LPM's weekly talk show, "In Conversation." He was with LPM from 2001-2023 and held many different titles, including Morning Edition host, Assignment Editor and Interim News Director. He died in August 2023. Read a remembrance of Rick here.
