Homeless Count Set for Tonight

The Coalition for the Homeless is working tonight to count the homeless population in Louisville. The annual ‘point-in-time’ survey is conducted so the organization knows how the homeless are faring in the city. The numbers are also submitted to the federal government to obtain funding.Mary Frances Shafer with the coalition says volunteers count as many homeless as they can in camps, and get attendance numbers from area shelters."We don’t necessarily get everybody because many of the homeless are hidden, and we might not know where everybody is," sasy Shafer.Last year, they counted 961 homeless people on Louisville streets or in shelters in one night. Shafer expects this year’s total will be higher.
