Horse Industry Leaders Ponder Future of Racing

The effort to prop up Kentucky’s horse industry by allowing slot machines at racetracks may have failed in the General Assembly, but the future of the industry is still the topic of heavy discussion in Kentucky. A panel of industry experts spoke today at the monthly Louisville Forum.Racetrack owners say slots are needed to supplement purses – and without them the top horses will race elsewhere, where slots are available. But Ed Flint with the Kentucky Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association says tracks in other states that have slots are suffering just as much as Kentucky tracks.“Every racetrack in America is down. Slots machines is not saving any of them," says Flint. "What is hurt(ing the industry), is the owners are getting out of this business. And that’s where this industry has got to find a way of making people want to buy horses and stay in them.”Other representatives on the panel suggested there is a lack of leadership in the industry, because there is no governing body.
