How do you explain the bond between a person and their pet (or pets) to someone who doesn’t have a pet? I know before my dog Bruno came into my life, I just didn’t get it. Yes, we had pets growing up, but in a household with four kids at any time there was a combination of dogs, cat (with kittens), mice, snakes, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and my sister’s escape artist hamster “Herman,” it was difficult to stay focused on anything.
Flash forward to 2001. I had recently bought my first house and decided it was time for my first dog. I’m not sure what I expected, but I truly fell completely in love with my 6.5lb boxer/pit mix puppy. Bruno became my constant companion, a walking buddy, a warm snuggler and an endless source of amusement. He changed my life.
Now, 7 years later, Bruno is 82 pounds of faithful companion. Over the years he has acquired a dad (when I got married) and a little brother (a wild, wild, beagle/boxer mix named Oki). He looks older, with an almost white muzzle, and he moves slower (but don’t we all), but he still looks at me with those big brown eyes and wags that stubby tail every time I walk into a room. What more could a girl ask for?
So, tell me your story, I’ll understand.
