I'll Have Another Retired; Dullahan New Belmont Favorite

Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another’s racing career is over. The colt’s handlers withdrew him from tomorrow’s Belmont Stakes after a swollen tendon was discovered in his left foreleg.     Owner Paul Reddam says he'll be retired. I’ll Have Another was the 4-5 favorite to win the Belmont Stakes and become racing’s first Triple Crown winner since 1978.Ed DeRosa, who's covering the Belmont for the racing information service brisnet.com, says the colt’s withdrawal is a big disappointment to fans and a racing industry eager for a Triple Crown champion."Having a shot is really important to thoroughbred racing, and missing out on it I’d say is definitely a blow.  Win or lose, it would have been great to have a healthy horse in the gate.   Certainly you can’t begrudge them for taking out a horse who’s not 100 percent but it’s definitely going to hurt interest in racing for the summer," he said.Dullahan, who finished third in the Kentucky Derby, was made the new early favorite in the Belmont, followed Union Rags and Paynter. The now 11-horse field will enter the starting gate shortly after 6:30pm Eastern time Saturday.
