Indiana Commission Recommends Limits for Tuition Increases

Public universities in Indiana have been asked to limit their tuition increases to 2.5 to 3.5 percent for the next two years. The Higher Education Commission approved the limits today, though universities are not required to follow. The 3.5 percent cap is recommended for Indiana University and Purdue. Other schools, including Indiana University Southeast, have been asked to adhere to the 2.5 percent limit. The recommendations are similar to the limits the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary education has placed on colleges in the commonwealth. The increases are higher in Kentucky, but the state does have a tiered system. The highest increase allowed are for U of L and UK. Those are six percent. The regional universities have five percent limits on tuition increases. Community colleges have four percent limits. The Indiana commission has further recommended lower increases for schools with many low-income students.
