Indiana Commission To Interview Nine Finalists For Supreme Court

The Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission this month will conduct second interviews with the nine finalists for the state Supreme Court, according to an Associated Press report.Thirty-four people applied to replace Justice Theodore Boehm, who plans to retire in September. The commission has narrowed the list to nine, and will interview the finalists on July 30th. It will then send three names to Governor Mitch Daniels, who will choose Boehm's replacement. The group of finalists is made up of five men and four women. Indiana is one of two state supreme courts in the U.S. without a female justice. Boehm has said he hopes Daniels will pick a woman to replace him on the court.Seven of the nine finalists are from Indianapolis or its neighboring counties. Six of them graduated from Indiana University's law school in Indianapolis. The other three graduated from IU's law school in Bloomington. The eventual appointee will be the first new justice since 1999.
