Indiana General Assembly Convenes Wednesday

The 2011 session of the Indiana General Assembly begins Wednesday in Indianapolis.In additional to approving a new, two year budget, lawmakers will be asked to consider a public education agenda set forth by Governor Mitch Daniels and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett.Indiana Youth Institute President Bill Stanczykiewicz calls the proposed changes "fundamental and significant.""The education reform discussions that are going to happen in this session of the Indiana General Assembly have the potential to impact several generations of Indiana kids," he said. The proposals include revamped evalution standards for teachers and administrators and more school choices, including charter schools.Also up for consideration is a program that would reward college-bound high school students who graduate a year early.
