Indiana Lawmakers Present Redistricting Plan

A redistricting plan put forth by Republicans who control the Indiana legislature would make some major changes to southern Indiana’s 9th Congressional District. The proposed new boundaries were drawn by the House and Senate majorities. Lawmakers released proposed maps for Indiana’s congressional districts, as well as state Senate and House districts.Under the proposed congressional map, the 9th District now represented by Republican Todd Young, would be shifted farther north, giving it all of heavily Republican Johnson County just south of Indianapolis. The district would still include Floyd Clark and Harrison counties, but Perry, Dubois and Spencer counties would be moved into the 8th District.Parts of Scott and Crawford counties would be moved to the 6th and 8th districts, respectively. The 9th Distict would also lose its portion of Bartholomew County but gain all of Lawrence County.Lawmakers say the goal is to have just over 720,000 people in each congressional district. The lines are redrawn to take into account population trends reported in the latest census.More details can be found in the Evansville Courier and Press.(Information for this story also came from the Associated Press)
