Indiana Lawmakers To Examine Immigration

The Indiana Legislative Council is currently choosing lawmakers to serve on a panel that will study illegal immigration.Once formed, the committee will cover four topics. The first two are economic, measuring the effect of illegal immigration on social services and employment. The third will look at the possible legislation to combat illegal immigration, making sure the state doesn’t violate any federal laws.Lastly, the committee will examine the potential of the E-Verify system. The system connects databases in the Departments of Homeland Security and Social Security allows employers to check the immigration status of potential hires.Indiana lawmakers considered two bills this year that would punish businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants.   Neither measure cleared the full General Assemlby. Some business owners and Hispanic groups say the legislation would create unfair punishments and promote racial profiling.
