Indiana Meetings To Focus On Improving Local Government

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels has announced plans for a series of regional meetings focusing on ways to make local governments in the Hoosier State more efficient and accountable.Daniels supports proposals to eliminate township government and replace the current three-member boards of county commissioners with a single county executive. He says this is not meant to be a criticism of the people who hold these positions."Overwhelmingly the people sitting in these offices are good folks and most are trying to do a good job. It's about a system that doesn't perform. Compromises that may well happen here along the line may grandfather some of these folks and give a transition period," he said. The proposals are being debated in the Indiana General Assembly. The first regional meeting will be held in Kokomo next week. Dates and locations of subsequent meetings will be announced soon.
