Indiana Teacher Pay Bill Wins Final Passage

A proposal to link Indiana teachers’ pay with student performance is close to becoming law.The merit pay bill won final approval in the state Senate by a 36-13 vote today. It now goes to Governor Mitch Daniels for his signature. The measure is part of Daniels’ expansive education agenda. It calls for teachers to be evaluated annually, with only those in the top two of four categories eligible for certain pay raises. Districts would not be able to place a student for two years in a row with teachers rated in the lowest category without notifying parents.Other elements of Daniels' education agenda include the creation of a private school voucher program and a bill that would allow for more charter schools. Both of those measures are awaiting final action. The General Assembly adjourns at the end of Friday.(Information for this story came from the Associated Press)
