Indiana Texting Bill Narrowly Clears Legislature

From the Associated PressThe Indiana Senate has narrowly given final legislative approval to a bill that would make it illegal for drivers to send or read text messages. The Senate voted 26-24 today in favor of the bill after several senators argued that the ban wouldn’t be enforceable because officers may not be able to tell whether a driver is texting or making a call.A compromise version earlier approved by the House removed a Senate-passed provision that would have also banned making cell phone calls while driving.Violators of the texting ban would face a maximum fine of $500.The bill now goes to Gov. Mitch Daniels.
