Internal Poll Shows Mourdock Leading Lugar

Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock released an internal poll on Wednesday showing a statistical dead heat with longtime incumbent Richard Lugar among likely GOP primary  voters. The survey was conducted by the polling firm McLaughlin & Associates and shows Mourdock ahead by one percentage point, which is a statistical tie. Other polls have put Lugar ahead his Tea Party challenger by up to seven points, but the six-term lawmaker has been plagued with a tough re-election bid for months.Mourdock says the internal poll shows Lugar is weak and that his campaign is well positioned for a victory in the May 8 primary."These poll results confirm what I have been hearing on the campaign trail for that past several months. After 36 years, Republican primary voters believe Senator Lugar is out of touch with their concerns and ready to elect a true conservative to the U.S. Senate," he says. "After the millions of dollars in personal negative attack ads by Senator Lugar and his Super PACs against me, Hoosier Republicans aren’t buying what they are trying to sell."The Lugar campaign could not be reached for comment.UPDATE:"Richard Mourdock will do or say anything to distract voters from the growing questions surrounding his illegal tax deductions and potential involvement in pay-to-play fundraising by DC-based interest groups," says Andy Fisher, a Lugar campaign spokesman. "The latest independent polling shows Senator Lugar in the lead as Hoosiers continue to learn they just can't trust Richard Mourdock."
