JCPS Bus Accident Sends 51 to Area Hospitals

Updated at 12:20Officials with JCPS now say 51 students have been taken to five area hospitals as precaution following an early morning accident where a car struck a school bus headed to Frost Middle School.JCPS Chief Operation Officer Mike Raiser told WFPL once the district learned from EMS which hospitals the students were being brought to, a response team of five to ten staff members was sent to those locations. Counseling will be available Monday for students who may need it and the district plans on contacting all the parents over the weekend to see if counseling or guidance is further needed in the home. Raiser said he was told the most serious injuries were head and arm injuries but nothing life threatening. He said that the district is taking every precaution. JCPS has a process in place for when accidents like this happen. District officials were able to locate the bus and identify students on the bus and streamlined all communication from parents to Frost Middle School, said Raisor. Reports from the  Courier-Journal and over Twitter show some concern from parents with the communication during the incident. Updated at 11:45 Reports now from various sources say that 52 individuals were transported to area hospitals. Also, three individuals in the car that collided with the bus--including the driver--are Butler High School students.   A car has collided with a Jefferson County Public Schools bus that was headed to Frost Middle School, according to reports from the  Courier-Journal. A total of 49 individuals were taken to area hospitals as a precaution, but it's unclear the extent of all their injuries. A spokesperson from Kosair Children's Hospital confirmed with the C-J that six children had been received at the hospital with injuries including broken bones and bruises, and the report said these are likely the most seriously injured.
