JCPS Bus Drivers Preparing For Start Of Classes

Hundreds of school buses will be on the streets of Louisville this week, but they'll be empty. The buses will be on practice runs. Drivers for Jefferson County Public Schools have been going through simulations of their routes in anticipation of the start of classes next Tuesday.About 900 buses will be used to transport some 63,000 students. The new elementary student assignment plan has led to new and revised routes for many drivers. To keep children from getting lost, transportation director Rick Caple says the district will give all elementary students lanyards and tags with their school name, bus number and stop address printed on them."This is the first year we've used these lanyards," he says. "In the past we've sued wristbands like in the hospital. We think this'll be easier, quicker and have the student on the right bus by the afternoon runs."Caple adds that the drivers have had few problems with this week's dry runs."We've done fine," he says. "We just want to make sure we're ready to go, so we're going to do some more practice on simulation, make sure drivers know the area and it also gets the public used to us being out in the neighborhoods."Caple says ride times, bus routes and the number of buses needed will all be adjusted during the first two weeks of school.
