JCPS Schools On Heightened Alert Following West Louisville Shootings

Story updated 3:27 pm.Jefferson County Public Schools officials anticipate now that approximately 100 middle and high school students could be affected after a West Louisville shooting put five schools on heightened awareness.WHAS also reports the the death count is now at three, with three others injured.Story updated 3:05 pm with reporting from the Associated Press.There are four people shot, two have died according to reports from West Louisville.Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell said Thursday afternoon officers found two men dead when they arrived on scene at Kentucky and 32nd. A third person at the time was taken to University of Louisville Hospital in critical condition.Identities have not yet been released, but a source tells WFPL one of the deceased may be a potential high profile gang member.Updated around 2:45What's being called a quadruple shooting in West Louisville near downtown has put five JCPS schools on high alert:

  • Engelhard
  • Byck
  • Brandeis
  • Maupin
  • Carter

The schools are not on lock-down; they are on a high security level purely as a precaution, JCPS officials said in an email. Those students living at 24th 25 and 26, 32nd  and Garland and the Elliot neighborhood where JCSP has bus stops are being taken to Central high school if the district can’t deliver students home.Any affected students will call their parents from Central and parents can pick them up or JCPS will deliver them home when the area is cleared.
