Jefferson County Schools Damaged by Flooding

Today’s flooding had the Jefferson County Public School district employees scrambling to deal with many of its facilities throughout the county. WFPL’s Elizabeth Kramer reports.Jefferson County Public Schools was scheduled have its buses on the roads Tuesday for the district’s annual test runs in advance of the upcoming school year. Instead, flooding caused the district to cancel that and respond to water damage at many of its facilities.Michael Mulheirn is the executive director for the school district’s facilities and transportation."We have about 30 schools that have had various forms of flooding," Mulheirn says. "We’re still accessing that and equipment damaged. And even our main service center was very severely flooded, that’s right next to the fairgrounds."Mulheirn says there's been various damage to the schools, but much of that still needs to be assessed."Manual High School has a brand new gym floor and that got flooded," he says. "We have a lot of schools with basements with boiler rooms and electrical switch gear. A lot of those got flooded so it’s going to be a lot of checking out, double checking before we put power back on to see if there was any long-lasting damage."The district received 1,000 sandbags from the US Army Corps of Engineers to prevent further flooding at the district's service center. Mulheirn says the district will begin taking a thorough inventory of the damage and its cost — and start its annual dry run of school bus routes Wednesday.
