Kentucky Alliance to Honor Ruth Bryant and Dr. Roscoe Bryant

The Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression will present its Carl and Anne Braden Lifetime Achievement Award this weekend.Ruth Bryant and the late Dr. Roscoe Bryant Jr. will receive the award this year. Ruth Bryant was active in the open housing movement in the 1960s, as was Dr. Bryant, who was also one of the first African-American members of the Jefferson County Medical Society.“These fascinating histories of these individuals, we're just afraid they'll be lost to history. That's why we want to recognize some of these folks while they're still alive," says co-chair K.A. Owens, adding that while the award recognizes Civil Rights advancements, it's also meant as a reminder for younger generations.“People don't realize the tremendous amount of work that was done to get us this far and what can be learned from those struggles and applied to today," he says. The award will be given Saturday at the Alliance's United Dinner. Past recipients include Civil Rights veteran Mattie Jones and former State Senator Georgia Davis Powers.
