Kentucky Awards Committee to Review Walsh Construction's Bridges Proposal

An engineering committee will review the proposal from a Chicago-based contractor group Monday that was conditionally chosen for Kentucky’s portion of the Ohio River Bridges Project.

Walsh Construction is composed of four independent contractor companies. Its bid this month was the least expensive of three proposals to design and build a new I-65 bridge and rework Spaghetti Junction at $971 million. That proposal will now be reviewed in detail by a state awards committee made up primarily of engineers, said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Chuck Wolfe. “They will go over the fine details of Walsh Construction’s proposal and it does get very detailed,” he said. Wolfe said he’s sat in on many awards committee meetings, and the group generally makes little to no recommendations for the proposal.  “It’ll be pretty much up or down. This will be Walsh’s project if we proceed with the contract,” he said. If the plan is approved, Walsh Construction can enter into a contract with the Transportation Cabinet, which is expected to happen before March of next year, Wolfe said. The team says it can finish the project by December of 2016, one and a half years ahead of the projected completion date. Walsh Construction is also part of the group that is being considered by Indiana’s finance cabinet to build that state’s portion of the bridges project, a new East End Bridge.
