Kentucky Lottery Turns Twenty

The Kentucky Lottery is celebrating its twentieth birthday.  On April 4th, 1989, then-governor Wallace Wilkinson bought the first two lottery tickets in Kentucky history.  Twenty years later, lottery officials say they’ve sold more than eleven-billion dollars in tickets, and handed out nearly seven-billion in prizes.  Lottery President and CEO Arch Gleason has been in charge for 15 of the lottery’s twenty years.  He sees some significant changes in its future.  “I think over the next decade we’re probably going to see more use of the internet and technology by lotteries," says Gleason, "but that depends on whether the public policy makers from a state and national level actually sanction that activity.”Gleason says another major change that could come to the lottery corporation is operation of video lottery terminals at Kentucky horse tracks, if expanded gaming is approved by state lawmakers.
