Kentucky-Made Horse Drug Wins FDA Approval

By Sheila AshA new drug to regulate ovulation in mares has received approval by the Food and Drug Administration.CreoSalus, a life sciences company based in Louisville, will manufacture SucroMate Equine. The company’s Chief Financial Officer, Jim Geisler, says it will be a more cost-effective way to ensure the likelihood of conception during breeding. "We expect more than half the sales of the product in the first year to occur outside of Kentucky. The product will retail for about 30 to 35 to 40 dollars a shot and that’s a small price when you compare the average cost to board and feed a mare of about 12,000 a year," he said.Geisler says the SucroMate Equine will be available at the beginning of the 2011 breeding season in February. He says work is underway for similar drugs for pigs and cows. SucroMate Equine is the first FDA approved drug of its kind to be developed and manufactured in Kentucky.
