Kentucky National Guard Airmen Return From Ebola Mission in West Africa

The Kentucky Air National Guard reportsthat nearly 50 airmen have returned to Louisville Wednesday from West Africa, where they were helping battle the spread of Ebola.

The 123rd Contingency Response Group established a processing cargo hub in Dakar, Senegal, in support of Operation United Assistance, the global effort to combat Ebola.

The hub is designed to accept large quantities of cargo arriving by aircraft. It will also process the material and then ship it to affect areas.

The station in Senegal is a World Health Organization-designated Ebola virus disease-free area approximately 800 miles from Liberia, the closest Ebola virus disease zone. The Guardsmen are not required to perform a 21-day quarantine, but they will undergo symptom monitoring as a precaution.

More members are expected to return later this week and over the weekend.

In October, soldiers from Fort Campbell deployed to Liberia to help with the Ebola virus outbreak there. They're helping to establish treatment units across the country and train healthcare workers.
