Kentucky Temporarily Delays Electronic Tax Returns

FRANKFORT, Ky. — State officials said Friday they will temporarily delay processing electronic tax returns following an increase of fraudulent filings from TurboTax.

The delay means it will take up to 14 days for people to receive a state tax refund instead of the usual seven to 10 business days. State officials said they hope to resume normal operations next week.

The issue is limited to people who use TurboTax, the online tax preparation service operated by Intuit. But state officials said filing tax returns electronically is safe and remains the quickest way to get a refund. Kentucky has offered electronic tax filing since 1995. In the past five years, the number of electronic filers has increased to 84 percent from 65 percent.
