KMAC Reopening Delayed until July 1

The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft has postponed its grand reopening until July 1. According to a May 27 news release, construction delays are to blame.

“Creating an accessible public art space in the context of our 150-year-old building makes this a highly ambitious project,” said KMAC Executive Director and Chief Curator Aldy Milliken. “Postponing the opening is necessary in order to ensure the structural integrity of our historic building for future generations.”

The $3 million renovation is intended to open up the 20,000 square feet of exhibition space and 6,000 square feet of public area in preparation for expanded educational outreach and curatorial initiatives.

During a recent tour of the construction site, KMAC Communication Manager Emily Miles explained that over the last five years, KMAC has transformed to offer more to the community as a whole.

“In this new flexible space, we will be able to meet the needs of our public of all ages in a much more realistic and contemporary way for the city of Louisville,” Miles said.

The July 1 reopening will coincide with the Republic Bank First Friday Hop. In addition, KMAC members and donors are invited to a June 30 preview of the new exhibition Material Issue. The museum will be open regular hours starting July 2.

All scheduled summer camps will take place in the KMAC Satellite Space until the museum reopens.
