KOIN Workshops This Week Across Kentucky

A series of workshops will be held across Kentucky this week to update the state's plan for communicating with so-called vulnerable populations during a public health emergency or disaster. The workshops are organized by the Kentucky Outreach and Information Network, or KOIN, which was created four years ago by the state Department for Public Health.Spokesperson Barbara Fox says vulnerable populations include people who are visually or hearing impaired, those who speak limited English and the elderly."Each outreach population group communicates differently. Each would take our message and they'd have to tailor it in different formats in order to reach these population groups that they service. For example, the deaf and hard of hearing, they use pagers," Fox said. One of the workshops will be held Friday on the University of Louisville Shelby Campus.
