Komen Won't Be Part of Oaks Day Awareness Effort

Churchill Downs has ended its three-year affiliation with the Susan G. Komen foundation for cancer awareness and fundraising activities on Kentucky Oaks Day. Churchill Downs spokesman Darren Rogers says those activities will continue, but with a differentorganization. This year the track has forged a partnership with the group Stand Up To Cancer for the Oaks. "We had a number of Oaks day fans that gave us feedback and they were looking on a broader scope of cancers that affect women and their families, not just breast cancer. We ended our relationship with Susan G. Komen For the Cure last year, (we) parted amicably, he said. Rogers says the change was not related to the recent controversy over Komen Foundation grants to Planned Parenthood. He says Oaks Day activities established in recent years such as a cancer survivors parade and the “Pink Out” will continue under the new partnership.
