KSP Still Understaffed, Officials Say

This year’s cadet class of Kentucky State Police Troopers graduates Friday morning in Frankfort, but officials say that still won't resolve KSP's chronic understaffing situation.Right now, there are 858 Kentucky State Police troopers. The cadet class graduating Friday will raise that to 921. But that’s still below preferred strength, says KSP Commissioner Rodney Brewer. “We should be at about 1070, which is our cap by statute. So, by any measurement, we are 100 to 150 troopers short on any given day,” he said.Brewer says the force is constantly rebuilding because of retirements and attrition. As the latest class of cadets prepares to graduate, KSP is already recruiting for next year’s class. Testing for trooper applicants begins October 18th at the Department of Criminal Justice Training at Eastern Kentucky University.
