Kurtz Elected To Bishops' Group Leadership Post

Louisville Archbishop Joseph Kurtz has been elected vice-president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.Kurtz was elected Tuesday on the third ballot in a runoff against the Archbishop of Denver during the group's fall General Assembly in Baltimore. He'll serve a three year term. The vice-president has typically been next in line for the presidency, but that was not the case this year.In what's being called an upset, New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan was elected president, handing a suprise defeat to Bishop Gerald Kicanas of Tuscon, Arizona. It's the first time since the 1960s that a vice-presidential candidate on the presidential ballot has been defeated.(Photo courtesy of the Archdiocese of Louisville)
