Late Close to School Year Affects Construction Projects

Classes end on Wednesday for Jefferson County Public Schools students. The extended school year will impact improvement and construction projects this summer. The school year was extended because of days lost to power outages from the wind and ice storms, in addition to snow days. Facilities and Transportation director Mike Mulheirn says each summer a few schools undergo major projects like installation of new heating and cooling systems, and the late close will make the jobs more difficult.“It has been, obviously, a challenge getting the schools back on line, I wish it hadn’t happened," says Mulheirn, "and then we would have had ten weeks in the summer to do the impossible, now we only have eight weeks to do the impossible.”Mulheirn says contractors are already on notice to add extra shifts to the project to get them completed in time for the start of the new school year in August.
