Fire departments across Jefferson County are marking National Fire Prevention Week with an appeal to citizens to make sure they have working smoke detectors and take other precautions to protect themselves and their families.Louisville Fire Chief Greg Frederick says too many people are still turning a deaf ear to such pleas."Each year we as fire officials are frustrated by the number of fires, the number of injuries, and above all, the number of people who die in fires, in our city and across the nation," he said.Frederick says Louisville firefighters have begun a canvassing effort this month of all single-family residences to make sure they contain a working smoke detector. He says people should also create a fire escape plan for their homes or businesses and practice using it.
