Louis H Coleman Jr. Drive Celebration Set For May 22

A motorcade in celebration of the renaming of 34th street to Louis H Coleman Jr. Drive will take place on Sunday May, 22. The motorcade will begin at Lyles Mall and end with a program at First Congregational Methodist Church, where Coleman was pastor.Co chair of the Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political Oppression KA Owens says the planning committee wanted to express gratitude for those who helped celebrate a dedicated fighter of injustice.“We do want to give credit to Mattie Jones and councilperson Judy Green” says Owens, “without those two it never would have happened so we want to give them all the respect they deserve for helping getting the street renamed.”Coleman was a longtime civil rights activist in Louisville.    He died in 2008.  The Metro Council approved the street re-naming early this year.Owens says says opponents of the renaming are misguided. “I just think they were off the mark, Reverend Coleman was such a significant figure really he carried the burden of everyone, he really did he was out there on so many issues,” he says “ because there were so many people who had legitimate grievances they had real problems that needed to be solved and they came to him and he helped.”There will be a reception immediately following the program in the Louis H. Coleman, Jr. Community Center.
