Louisville Archdiocese To Mark Bicentennial

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville will celebrate a major milestone Tuesday. It was on April 8, 1808 that Pope Pius VII established the Diocese of Bardstown, Kentucky, the first inland diocese in the United States. It moved north to Louisville in 1841 and was elevated to Archdiocese in 1937.Archdiocese of Louisville Chancellor Brian Reynolds says a series of services will be held Tuesday to commemorate the bicentennial."First beginning in Bardstown, which is where our roots were, there's a Mass in the morning at St. Thomas parish, which is actually the location of the first seminarythat served the west in our diocese. there's a noon mass at the Cathedral (of the Assumption)  in downtown Louisville and then a Vespers service back in Bardstown," Reynolds said. The observance will culminate this summer with a archdiocesan-wide  celebration at Louisville Slugger Field. The modern Archdiocese of Louisville covers 24 Central Kentucky counties and  includes some 200,000 parishoners.
