Open Studio Weekend returns to Louisville this week for its second year. Organized by LVAA and the University of Louisville’s Hite Art Institute, more than 80 local artists will open their working spaces to the public on Saturday and Sunday. It’s an opportunity for art lovers to see an artist’s works-in-progress and to score a rare peek behind the scenes into the creative process.
“I feel like some people have this perspective of artists as them being these esoteric beings, or kind of a hermit or sage, but it kind of opens up that we’re just regular people working in our studios,” said artist Shohei Katayama. “It also invites people to see how artists construct their work or conceptualize it.”
Last year’s Open Studio Weekend generated almost 20,000 studio visits and garnered more than $60,000 in commission-free sales for the participating artists. That’s good news—and a big opportunity—for an emerging artist like Katayama, 26, to reach out to new audiences and potential collectors.
“I’m a very communal-based artist, so I really like to see the art movement progressing within a community,” said Katayama.
Katayama, a member of Pyro Gallery who graduated from Bellarmine University, describes his work as “kinetic-oriented”—he works with magnets, solar power, and other elements of natural power to create movement in his installations. This is the first year Katayama (no relation to WFPL’s Devin Katayama) will open his Old Louisville studio to the public. His working space, a second apartment in the same building where he lives, is newly-renovated, but it’s not a pristine, sterile space.
“I’m a warehouse boy. I like to make industrial-oriented artwork. I’m going to mess up the studio place. The studio place should be dirty,” he said with a laugh.
You’ll see some of Katayama’s works in progress, and he might have a DJ or live music playing, too.
“Just to make it fun,” he said. “I’m not that serious. I’m pretty goofy.”
A preview exhibit that runs at the Cressman Center (100 East Main St.) through Saturday can help ticket-holders narrow down their visits. LVAA makes finding the studios easy for iPhone users through their free Louisville Art Finder app, which includes a map to the open studios and an artist directory. Ticketing information is available online.
Studios open for visits at 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $25 ($20 for LVAA members), with proceeds benefiting LVAA’s children’s art classes and U of L art scholarships.
