Louisville Bats Market to Groups to Keep Attendance High

Louisville’s Triple-A baseball team is hoping to maintain its fan base after ranking third last year in paid attendance among minor league ball parks. The Louisville Bats has averaged slightly more than 9,000 fans a game since the team moved to Louisville Slugger Field downtown in 2000. It's not uncommon for minor league teams to see a drop in attendance when moving locations, said Bats spokesman Nick Evans. But the Bats have maintained a consistent record, he said. Last year, the team ranked third out of 174 minor league teams. This year, Slugger Field will continue offering the same promotions and events that have been successful in the past, said Evans.“We’ve continued doing that because we’ve had success with it and people are familiar with it. We do try to start new things but this year we’re just focusing on the things that do work and just trying to maintain everything," he said. While season ticket sales have dropped, marketing for group seating has increased, said Evans.“Our group numbers have been on a constant rise. After you’ve been here for 12 years I think you’re going to see a drop in your season tickets, but we’ve moved our focus to groups and we’ve seen an increase in our group revenue every year. It’s just a different business model," he said. The Bats home opener is this Friday. Evans said the largest crowd at Louisville Slugger Field was opening day 2006 when more than 14,000 fans attended.
