Louisville Doctors Head to Haiti This Week

A team of Louisville doctors is planning to leave for Haiti this week.Norton orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Zack Stearns has been abroad several times on mission trips to Jamaica, Ghana and Guatemala, though he says he’s never been to the scene of a catastrophe like he’ll see in Haiti.Stearns says he was contacted by Southeast Christian Church and Doctors Without Borders to join a team of orthopaedic surgeons and anesthesiologists.“My initial reaction was that I needed to go," says Stearns. "This is like the quiet voice of God that tugs on your heart to go help. My first thought from that was that I really needed to go. It was almost impossible to say no.”Stearns says he has no idea where he’ll be working or where he’ll stay once he gets to Haiti. The team had planned to leave over the weekend, but delays in flight coordination have moved the its departure date to Tuesday or Thursday of this week.
