Louisville Group Offers Ideas for Boosting Bourbon Tourism

A work group tasked with further developing bourbon-centric tourism in Louisville has made its recommendations. The group suggests the creation of a bourbon visitors center, a bourbon and food festival and a bourbon certification for restaurant server and bartenders. They’d also like to see a larger bourbon presence at the Louisville International Airport and a marketing strategy for the city that centers around bourbon and food.“Bourbon tourists are coming to the city in greater numbers than ever before. They stay longer. From a demographic standpoint, they have a higher spending profile than other tourists as well,” Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said Monday while announcing the group's recommendations.Fischer appointed the bourbon and food work group last year.  He said the proposed projects will have a major economic impact and set the city apart from other destinations.“Not only does it grow jobs and the economy,” he says. “But every city wants to have uniqueness, authenticity and our food and bourbon scene really gives us authenticity, a reason for people to come here, and obviously it’s a lot of fun at the same time.”The mayor is also taking ideas from the public until May 31. Anyone with input can email Chris Poynter at chris.poynter@louisvilleky.gov or emlaee.lundin@louisvilleky.gov. Suggestions can also be submitted via Twitter (@louisvillemayor) or Facebook.
