Louisville Metro Council to Choose New District 10 Member on Thursday

The Louisville Metro Council is expected to choose a new member on Thursday.

The District 10 seat, which includes Buechel, Camp Taylor and Germantown, became vacant last month with the death of Council President Jim King.

On Monday, the council  interviewed nine candidates who'd applied for the post. The council will choose one of them to serve until November, when an election will be held for the seat.

The Jefferson County Democratic Party has already nominated assistant county attorney Pat Mulvihill for the November election. Mulvihill is also one of the applicants for the seat.

But council Democratic spokesman Tony Hyatt said that doesn't mean Mulvihill is a shoe-in for the seat.

"There are people who are probably going to look back over things and make some tough decisions between now and then," said Hyatt.

(The public can review the interviews at the Metro Council website.)

“It’s one thing to float a name out there. But then the council got a chance to see everybody," he said.

Council Republicans, on the other hand, are consider throwing their support behind a few candidates, according to spokesman Steve Haag.

But the minority party would need a number of votes from Democrats should they choose to support a particular candidate.

The winner of the November election will serve the remainder of King’s term through 2016.

Here is a list of the current candidates:

  • Bruce Brightwell, attorney

  • Nicholas Clark, independent insurance agent
  • Rich Gimmel, Race Track Chaplaincy of Kentucky, executive director
  • Jon Heck, attorney

    • Peter Hayes, Service For Peace, director
  • Liz Martin, adjunct professor, University of Louisville Kent School of Social Work
  • Michael Meeks, JCPS substitute teacher, lobbyist
  • Pat Mulvihill, Jefferson County Attorney’s Office, director of civil division
  • Steve Magre, director of Child Care Advocates of Kentucky and a former member of the old Louisville Board of Aldermen
