The Louisville Orchestra will be providing the soundtrack to the 2016 Thunder Over Louisville fireworks display, Kentucky Derby Festival officials announced on Tuesday.

In addition to classical tunes by Mozart, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, the soundtrack will also include pop songs by My Morning Jacket, Michael Jackson, and others.

The University of Louisville’s Collegiate Chorale will also be heard on the soundtrack, which is being recorded this week at the Brown Theatre.

The project marks the first time that the entire soundtrack has been provided by a single performing group.

In past years, recordings of pop, rock and country music were mostly used for the Thunder Over Louisville soundtrack.

Thunder Over Louisville, the kickoff of the Kentucky Derby Festival, is April 23. The fireworks show is held each year on the Louisville waterfront.

Kentucky Derby Festival chief executive Mike Berry said in a news release that a Louisville Orchestra-performed soundtrack for Thunder has been on the festival's "bucket list for a while."

Teddy Abrams, the orchestra's music director since 2013, said Thunder was one of his first introductions to Louisville.

"It was very exciting to see this community rally around an event with such enthusiasm that I instantly had the goal to get the orchestra to be a part of it somehow," he said in the news release.
