Louisville Parent Meets President Obama

A Jefferson County parent will meet President Barack Obama Thursday in recognition of parent engagement in children's education.Myrdin Thompson is a mother of three and an active PTA member who was chosen last year to be a member of Champions of Change, which is Mr. Obama’s campaign to recognize outstanding individuals from educators to entrepreneurs. The small group of 12 champions will help celebrate the one year anniversary of the campaign.

When discussing her work, Thompson says parents are the consumers of the education product.“Our children don’t have the legal rights to vote, so we’re voting with their best interest at heart hopefully. And it’s important for us to recognize what’s happening in policy at a national level concerning education and how it distills down to state and then local decision making," she says.Jefferson County Public Schools does a good job at providing outreach to parents, she said, but it’s the effort by all parties that ensures engagement in children’s education.Thompson will meet with Mr. Obama and 11 other members of Champions of Change on Friday. The group is expected to reflect their successes of being champions and to help the President celebrate the one year anniversary of the campaign.
